Barcelona are planning to review the contracts of some of their star players in 2016. New deals are on the Christmas cards, with a big pay cheque inside.
Neymar: All that’s left is to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. The Brazilian has shaken hands on a contract that will triple his salary, which will jump from 10.5 million euros before tax per year to 30m, making him the second highest paid player in the squad.
Sergio Busquets: The board had promised to improve his terms even though he extended his contract last term. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has informed the midfield linchpin that this promise will be honoured.
Luis Suárez: The club will put his pay packet in the top bracket. Once Neymar’s raise is confirmed, it will leave Suárez earning half of what the Brazilian will be pocketing. The Camp Nou higher-ups are well aware that they will have to redress the balance.
Leo Messi: He is currently tied to the club until 2017-18. This could be the most difficult deal of all to negotiate, as the Argentine will want to boost his already considerable wages (50m a year) and will have plenty of leverage in terms of the many other clubs who would love to sign him. Barça are eager for the pint-sized genius to end his career at the Camp Nou.
