Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal it is! Luis Enrique’s side will play the first leg in London at the end of February, with the second leg taking place in Barcelona in March.
FC Barcelona, the reigning champions of the Champions League, will face Arsenal in the last 16 of the 2015-16 edition of the tournament. The draw, which took place in Nyon on Monday, paired the Catalan side with the Premier League team, who finished second in their group. The first leg will be played in London and the second leg at Camp Nou.
Luis Enrique’s side qualified as group winners after easing through a group which featured Roma (1-1, 6-1), Bayer Leverkusen (2-1, 1-1) and BATE Borisov (2-0, 3-0). That left them with four wins and two draws. They scored 15 goals on route to the next round (2.5 per game) and and conceded four (0.6). Roma, who finished second, were eight points back.
Luis Suarez, with five goals, was Barcelona’s top scorer. Lionel Messi (3), Ivan Rakitic (2), Neymar (2), Sergi Roberto (1), Gerard Pique (1) and Adriano (1) scored the other goals. Barça have won the European cup five times since they first lifted the trophy in 1992 – 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015 completing the quintet.
Their aim not is to become the first team to retain the trophy in the Champions League era (1993-2016). The first leg will against Arsenal will be played on February 23, with the return on March 16. The final is on May 28 at the San Siro in Milan.
