Lionel Messi will be missing from football for as long as two months after suffering a knee injury against Las Palmas, Barcelona have confirmed.
FC Barcelona’s victory against La Liga minnow Las Palmas was marred by a nasty-looking knock to the knee suffered by the blaugrana’s mercurial number 10.
The official Twitter indicates that Lionel Messi – who was taken to a hospital immediately after being replaced by Munir El Haddadi – suffered a tear in the internal collateral ligament in his left knee and will be out for seven to eight weeks.

He remained grounded for three minutes as he was tended to by doctors, before eventually deciding that he could continue. The footballing superstar was felled after a clash was goalkeeper Javi Varas only three minutes into the match.
The Argentina superstar was withdrawn from the action at the Camp Nou after just 10 minutes in the fixture earlier on today, and his club have since revealed on Twitter that the 28-year-old sustained an internal collateral ligament tear.
With questions already being asked of Luis Enrique’s perceived lack of squad depth, as well as the cloud left hanging over the club following the injury to another South American, culé hearts and minds are well and truly focused on one thing: what will happen between now and when Messi next steps onto the pitch?
The injury was picked up when Messi cut in from the left-wing early on in the encounter against Las Palmas and had a shot blocked by Pablo Bigas.
The forward received treatment on the pitch but was substituted after a few minutes when it became clear that it was not an issue that could simply be ran off.
Clásico date confirmed
With a post that all Barca fans will have received with dread, the worst was realised. Messi could be out for as long as eight weeks, and he’ll certainly be a doubt for the first El Clasico clash of the season against Real Madrid on November 22.
Speaking of recovery times and Messi’s return, football fans the world over will be hoping the Argentine recovers by the 20:30 on the 21st of November 2015 – the date of the first Clásico of the 2015-2016 La Liga season, at the Santiago Bernabéu.
For Barça, who notoriously suffer from the ‘FIFA virus,’ the fact that the date has been penciled in after a week of international friendlies – Spain v England certainly catches the eye – will cause some alarm, yet the same could be said for Madrid, who will play Atlético de Madrid, Celta Vigo, and Sevilla away from home in the run up.
Revenge? Another Madrid win? Will the gap between the clubs widen or narrow? Who will top the table: Barça, Madrid, or neither?
None can say, yet all will be watching.
Neymar Jr. frozen out
What is it with South American footballers and unpaid taxes? Another one joins the ranks.
As a consequence for Neymar Jr.’s alleged tax infractions – of which a more detailed breakdown of the charges leveled against the Brazilian superstar can be found here – €42 million of the Brazilian’s assets have been frozen.
