FC Barcelona got their job done on Sunday against Villarreal at Camp Nou. The time of the game and the physical state of some of the players, who have not been able to take a rest due to the injuries at the club, didn’t hinder Luis Enrique’s side picking up another three points.
After a goalless first half, two goals from Neymar and a Luis Suarez penalty guided Barça to the win. With their work done, Real Madrid had to go to the Sanchez Pizjuan to take on Sevilla. To go into the Clasico level on points on November 21 at the top, they needed to win.
But in their way was Sevilla, who were led by an impressive Yevhen Konoplyanka. They recovered from Sergio Ramos’s early acrobatic effort to win 3-2, with goals from Ciro Immobile, Ever Banega and Fernando Llorente. James Rodriguez scored late on, but it was too late – the points stayed in Seville.
Barça and Madrid had been tied for top spot in La Liga since up until the 10th round of fixtures, but with this surprise defeat, just before the Clasico, Rafa Benitez’s side will go into their meeting with Barcelona three points behind. A defeat could see them slip six points back.
