Bayern Munich’s ‘Open Media Day’ continued with an appearance from Javi Martinez.
As well as other things, the former Athletic Club midfielder-cum-defender was effusive in his praise for Xavi Hernandez. Martinez said the Barcelona midfielder has the quality to play “until he is 50”.
Here is what else the Bayern and Spain player had to say ahead of facing Barça in the Champions League semi-final…
On Xavi Hernandez: Xavi, with his quality, could play until he is 50. I spent several years with him in the national team and I learned a lot from him. For Barcelona and for Spanish football it is a pleasure to have him. I don’t know if it’s official that he will go or not, but it’s a shame that players like him have to grow old.
On Andres Iniesta: He can decide any match, he always sees things differently. It is the same in the national team, but Barça have many top players and they all need to be watched carefully.
On Camp Nou visit: “We are not thinking about a draw, only about going there to do as well as possible. We have to try and win. The second leg will be tough whatever the result. We are confident in ourselves, we have a great team, a great manager and we’re hungry to do well. We’re going to go for it.
Spain return: “To play in Spain after eight months out, in a Champions League semi-final against an incredible rival… It’s what you dream of when you’re young and I am completely motivated.”
Injuries at Bayern: “We are having bad luck. We are without key players, players who can decide games.”
On his own fitness: “I’m training now with the group, doing some intense sessions. The feelings are good and I am ready when the manager wants me. Hopefully I can play on Saturday in the Bundesliga and then we’ll see…”
