Claudio Bravo has vanquished the ghost of Víctor Valdés, whose exploits in the Barcelona goalmouth promised to be a tough act to follow. Sacrifice, hard work and determination have seen him win title after title with Barcelona. There can be no doubt that he has staked his claim to the shot-stopper’s position.
The Chilean has made history on winning the Club World Cup. Focused and alert, he plays the ball with his feet as well as, if not better than, many outfield players and Barcelona finished the competition without conceding a single goal. The trophy which they won against River Plate is his sixth of the year.
The Chilean’s six titles consist of La Liga – in which he won the Zamora trophy as the best goalkeeper of the season -, the Copa del Rey – in which he did not feature – and the Champions League, where similarly he did not play a sufficient number of minutes for UEFA to include him in the official statistics. Nevertheless, the medal he was handed after the 3-1 win over Juventus remains his.
In the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla he was left on the bench in favour of Marc-André ter Stegen. And in the Copa América, it was his job to lift the trophy for Chile after they beat Argentina. He also scooped the best player award for the competition.
