Gerard Pique gave an interview to El Pais, during which he talked about his current form with Barça, the Club World Cup, the recent reaction to his emoticon tweet after the ‘Cheryshev case’ and his comments about Alvaro Arbeloa.
Pique, with his usual sense of humour, said this about his now famous reaction on social media after Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey faux pas, which even drew a reply from Guti on Twitter.
“The thing with the emoticons, I was watching Leo Harlem on La Sexta and I was laughing a lot [twinkle in his eye, smiling]. No, seriously, I don’t thing we should take these things out of ,” he said.
On the whistles he receives when he plays for Spain, he claimed he doesn’t even always here them, also saying that it’s not something which gets to him to much.
“People go on about it and it adds to the morbo, it’s become fashionable, but sometimes I’m so focused on the game I don’t even notice,” he added.
“In one game I said to [Marc] Bartra at half-time: There were no whistles today, right? He just laughed. Apparently there were!”
He was also asked about the opportunity he had to score the fifth goal for Barça at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid.
“I didn’t have anything planned [for if I scored] like they said,” he responded.
“I’m a Cule and chances like that, to score another goal at 0-4, are few and far between.
“For that reason I wanted to score. But I also wanted to score against Roma! It’s my way of playing.”
