Barcelona legend Xavi has called on Real Madrid fans to stop booing Gerard Pique ahead of Spain’s European Championship qualifier with Luxembourg on Friday.
Pique has been booed by Real fans since mocking the club’s inability to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey or Champions League in 2014/15, specifically commenting on Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial 30th birthday celebrations with Colombian rapper Kevin Roldan back in February.
Speaking at an event organised by personal training equipment company Tocball, Xavi said, relayed by Marca:
“The time has come for fans to whistle less and show more support. He’s representing Spain, he wants to play and Real Madrid fans whistle him because of what he said at the Camp Nou [in reference to Kevin Roldan], but that’s it. Pique is an extraordinary player and makes a difference both at Barca and for Spain, he’s one of the best central defenders in the world. Fans should show him more respect.”
Reigning champions Spain will secure their place at Euro 2016 with a win in Logrono on Friday.
