The day that counts has landed to the end with a change made by election, for the past weeks people were waiting this day to know the results. Betting and predicting and analyzing but here it is Josep Maria Bartmeu has been elected to continue his career as FC Barcelona President. A landslide victory. Bartmeu claimed a staggering 54.63% of the 47,270 votes. The victory ensures that Bartomeu will continue in the role until 2021, having assumed the presidency in somewhat less democratic fashion in 2014 following the resignation of Sandro Rosell.
The way certain victory tends to clarify the nature of the 2015 election race; Joan Laporta announced his candidacy late, and as such was always playing catch-up. His entire programm lacked any real depth and instead attempted to tug on the heartstrings of socis with promises of a return to the Barça of Johan Cruyff and of Pep Guardiola – the primary issue being that FC Barcelona has moved on, made peace with their history and are in the process of ushering in a new era under the guidance of Luis Enrique.
And so, with last season’s triplete working firmly in his favour, Bartomeu cantered to victory and left Laporta trailing in his wake. For all the pre-election talk of Agustin Benedito “stealing” votes from Laporta, the cold hard truth is that in the end, it wouldn’t have mattered one iota.
Bartomeu will now turn his attentions to delivering on his election campaign; many of the negative aspects from Rosell’s mandate may soon be reversed as a consequence. Shirt sponsorship, a renewed focus on Espai Barça; these are just two of the key areas that will likely dominate the headlines in the weeks and months to follow.
What do we think Cules? Are you ready for six more years with Bartomeu at the helm?
