Steven Gerrard predicts in his new autobiography that his former Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho could be the next big star to be chased by Europe’s biggest clubs, and it looks like he was spot on.
After Barca superstar and Coutinho’s best-mate Neymar encouraged Coutinho to dump the Reds last week, new reports have emerged suggesting that the Catalan giants have begun testing the waters surrounding Coutinho’s availability.
According to the Sunday Times, enquiries were made for the Brazilian in the summer transfer window just past, as Liverpool negotiated for outgoing Barca youngster Adama Traore.
Traore ended up signing for Aston Villa but Brendan Rodgers and co were left fearing that a message had been sent from Spain that they’d be back for Coutinho.
Despite signing an improved contract until 2020, it goes without saying that Barcelona have the financial muscle to meet pretty much any realistic asking price and wages for the attacking midfielder.
We’ll probably be hearing a lot more about this one in the months to come.
