Tired Sergio Busquets one of three Barcelona players to hit 1,000 minutes
Barcelona are getting every drop of juice out of the midfielder, who, thanks to injuries to Rafinha and Sergi Roberto, plus Spain’s reliance on him, has not been able to rest much.
Sergio Busquets is one of three players in the squad that has played more than 1,000 minutes this season.
First in the list is Luis Suarez, at 1,120m, though he has not played for his country during the international break sand had the entire summer off, so it’s not that surprising.
Second is Javier Mascherano, who has played 1,028, and then comes Busquets, 1,022.
The rest of the players have not reached four figures, though Rakitic is close on 949 minutes.
Evidently, Luis Enrique is trying not to overuse his men. Against Rayo Vallecano Javier Mascherano was benched, against BATE it was Rakitic, until Sergi Roberto’s injury required him to play.
Busquets is the next to be rotated then, in theory. He has played more minutes than anyone else in La Liga, 632, to Mascherano and Suarez’s 630, and Vicente del Bosque has played him several times for Spain, considering him irreplacable.
The Eibar game could have been a good chance to rest him, but Sergi Roberto’s injury put paid to that. The coaches consider it important he is given a break, and we have seen Gumbau brought on for him several times. Instead of the Eibar game, he may be given a break in the Copa del Rey, so he wouldn’t have to play until Saturday October 31, vs Getafe.
