Although he played in the Copa Catalunya, the game against Villanovense will be considered Wilfrid Kaptoum’s Barcelona debut. In the club they do not think this is just a sporadic appearance; he will play a few times.
Kaptoum is considered a pivote, a No 6. And he has grown in this position up until he arrived in the Juvenil B team under Garcia Pimienta. And from there, the coach played him five or six times, but didn’t get the performances he expected, given the class the Cameroonian possessed. And he had big chat with him. He wanted to know why he wasn’t performing to the level he should be able to.
What he said in that chat only those two know. But what we know is the consequence it had. In the next game, Kaptoum didn’t play as a 6 but as a 10. He changed from pivote to interior. And from there, yes. He delivered the performances that his coach believed he could. And his progression has been spectacular, hampered only by muscle injuries – a problem for him.
And although in football you never know what will happen, Kaptoum has everything to become a first teamer in a couple of years. Vision of play, head always high, can play with both feet, some excellent feints and very high technical ability.
Adria Arjona, who played by his side as a youngster, defines him perfectly. “He’s a player that you see that improves with every training session he has and every game he plays. Just to watch him train was a pleasure.”
