Andres Iniesta is thrilled to be playing in his first Clasico as captain of FC Barcelona. He said on Thursday that he hopes the intensity with which he’s been through several Clasicos will go on for a long time, with these type of games especially motivating for professionals. “I hope I keep going on like a motorbike,” he joked.
Iniesta said that Barcelona are heading into an “unpredictable” clash, but highlighted that “if there is something that we know clearly it’s that to win we have to be ourselves.”
“We have to be protagonists with the ball, dominate the game and take advantage of our chances. If we want to win, we have to do everything well.”
Iniesta also didn’t give much stock to the idea that Madrid are weak coming into the game. “To say that Madrid are weak would be very daring on our part and that’s not our thinking. In Madrid I see a very potent opponent, one of the best in the world. A complicated opponent, like always.
“The numbers indicate that on a defensive level they are good. And offensively their players are able to score goals.”
Asked about his best Bernabeu memory, Iniesta recalled the 2-6 win in 2009, “for the importance and the play”, and said that for a Barcelona player to win in Madrid is always special.
“Because of the happiness for your people. It’s all positive and all magnificent, in a game like this for everyone, it has a transcendental emotion, and is very important. To win there is always an important morale injection.”
