Barcelona fans will wave up to 20,000 estelada flags during the Champions League clash with BATE Borisov on Wednesday night. The supporters are angry with UEFA after they fined the club for them being waved at previous games – the flag is Catalonia’s flag with the blue and white section with the star representing a desire for independence.
Barcelona created a display supporting “Freedom of expression” and brought it out at the Eibar game, in a thinly veiled jab at UEFA. The Catalan side have been fined €30,000 and €40,000 for previous estelada related offences.
UEFA will have two options. Increase the punishment, or lower their sword – Josep Maria Bartomeu says Barcelona have no intention of caving on this front.
